Data Center Metrics Demystified
Data center efficiency goes beyond knowing if servers are still up. These days, data center managers are accountable for energy usage, energy efficiency, compliance, regulation, and the list goes on. more

The Green Gold Rush Over Iceland’s Data Centers
There is a gold rush mentality right now when it comes to building data centers in Iceland, according to execs of the companies that have been moving into that market. The latest person to reference this phrase to me is Tate Cantrell, CTO of startup Verne Global, and he told me it’s not uncommon for his web-serving customers to bring up the description when asking about the industry. more

Iceland as a Prime Data Center Location
Data centers are well known as power hogs, with their extensive information technology equipment (having its own power needs) coupled with equally extensive cooling equipment (which further increases power usage). As energy costs rise and as the political climate increasingly frowns on fossil-fuel-based energy, companies are responding by searching for ways to reduce costs, reduce their environmental impact, and rely more on green energy sources. more

Free Cooling

With a Verne Global data center, you can avoid using expensive chiller systems by taking advantage of free cooling, 365 days a year.

The mean temperature in Iceland is -0.5°C (30°F) in January and 13°C (55°F) in July. We put that cool air to use through highly efficient heat exchangers. As a result, we can handle power densities of up to 15 to 20 kW per rack using cooling from Iceland's ambient temperature alone. This compares very favorably with some data centers that struggle to accommodate densities as low as four to five kW – and even then, with high cooling costs.

Should you need higher-density racks, we can also provide customized cooling solutions, including close-coupled cooling or even naturally chilled water cooling, without the expensive chillers. Iceland has a continuous supply of naturally chilled water, perfectly suited for a water-cooled environment.

At Verne Global, environmental cooling and intelligent design allow you to reduce typical cooling costs by 80% or more.
